Latest Eurostat data show that the gender difference in gross hourly average earnings in the EU 27 Member States was still 13% in favour of men. Beyond the persistence of wage inequality within the Member States, this gap, which is calculated on the basis of all employees' salaries, bears witness to the difference in gender-based access to the best paid positions.
In the European Union, 08 March, i.e., International Women’s Day (IWD) is still far from being a purely symbolic event. Eurostat data published on 25 February 2022, reveal that the overall gender pay gap had only decreased by 2.8 points in 10 years. EU Member States had thus only managed to achieve 18% of the effort required to eliminate gender pay inequality.
