The “climate” change package adopted on January 23, 2008, proposes to revise the Directive on the EU Emissions Trading System which aims at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in 2020 compared to 1990. This text, which is currently on a first reading at the Council and in Parliament, should be adopted at the end of the year, under the French presidency, to strengthen the EU’s position for the international negotiations on climate change which opened during the Bali conference in December.
…EU: first joint statement of the steel industry’s social partners
The European steel industry's employers (Eurofer) and the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) adopted a joint declaration as part of the Sectoral Social Dialogue Committee on Steel, so that European Institutions amend the draft regulation aiming at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% in 2020 compared to 1990. These amendments are necessary to safeguard the European steel industry and its 370.000 jobs. (Ref. 080348)
