Whistleblowers will soon be able to avail of a minimum level of protection across the whole of the EU. On the evening of 11 March the EU Parliament, EU Council and European Commission came to a preliminary agreement on the EU’s first regulation addressing the issue. The goal of the document is to better protect whistleblowers who report on illegal activities as well as those that run counter to EU legislation goals and purposes. In contrast with the EU Commission proposal, whistleblowers will now no longer have to first report incidents to their own organizations before making the information more widely available.
A broad array of relevant domains. The future Directive covers workers in the private and public sectors who report information secured as part of their work. The text provides minimum guarantees and safeguards for employees, interns, sub-contractors, service providers, consultants, as well as for those who assist whistleblowers with the reporting process (facilitators, work colleagues, family members, investigative journalists).
