The EU has taken a new step forward in the fight against social dumping. After a long night of negotiations on 12 December, representatives of the European institutions reached a provisional compromise on the working conditions of truck drivers and on market rules aimed at preventing unfair competition in the transport sector. The agreement however needs to be validated by the European Parliament and Member States, a final step that cannot yet be guaranteed, some observers warn.
The so-called ‘mobility package’, which was unveiled in May 2017, seeks to make the mobility system “clean, competitive and connected” (see article n°10236). Of the proposals put forward, there were three that focused on rest times for drivers and their wages, introducing enhanced controls.
