Procrastinating, despising the Parliament, confirming a real breakdown within the Commission… all reasons are possible. After the overwhelming vote, on January 15, in favor of the own-initiative report introduced by Spanish socialist MEP Alejandro Cercas on socially responsible restructurings, the MEPs probably weren’t expecting this. The European Commission is hiding its inability to provide an answer to the assembly elected by the people and appears completely closed off, even though it has been working on the issue for over 10 years. (Ref. 130353)
Nothing official yet, everything is still in the institutions’ corridors. On January 15, a large majority of MEPs adopted the report on the anticipation of change and socially responsible restructurings (see articles No. 130030 and 130039). The European Commission should have answered weeks ago. With this report, the EP tested the new prerogative recognized by the Lisbon Treaty: calling on the Commission to take a legislative initiative on a subject and, if it refuses, explain why.
