The European Commission continues to implement its European Social Rights Pillar that aims to ensure the upward convergence of social protection. On 13 March the European Commission presented a ‘social justice package’ that revolves around a legislative proposal aimed at establishing a European Labour Authority (c.f. article No.10601), as well as an initiative to ensure access for all workers and self-employed to social protection.
The European Commission remarked that currently almost 40% of people employed are either in an atypical employment situation – meaning that they are not working under a full-time, open-ended contract – or self-employed ,and that as a result, it was making a recommendation to the Member States encouraging them to adapt their own social protection systems.
