EU: on the occasion of its 8th national assembly, the European Mine, Chemical and Energy Workers’ Federation is clarifying its organizational and union strategy

In a special motion, the EMCEF’s representatives first looked at merger prospects between their federation and the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF) and the European Trade Union Federation of Textile, Clothing and Leather (ETUF:TCL). The document points to the need to reach a common position between the three federations about globalization and its financial aspects, deindustrialization, the crisis, and the merger between national federations. Organizational and structural issues were also debated with Peter Scherrer, EMF general secretary. The motion states that each of the federations should keep its identity. It lays down four objectives: 1/ create a new federation, i.e. no merger or absorption; 2/ build an “ambitious” joint platform; 3/ “optimize strengths and synergies” between the federations; 4/ maintain a strong sectoral identity, which is important for the EMCEF that covers many sectors.
