“There’s an intrinsic contradiction between what is expected from the Commission and what it can give.” From the beginning of the meeting organized on Friday, the civil servant who came to represent the European Commission agreed that there was currently a gap between the demands of the principle of subsidiarity by virtue of which the EU only steps in, for social matters, when it is absolutely necessary, on the one hand and, on the other, European citizens’ high expectations in this sphere.
Initiated by the Association of journalists specialized in social issues (Association des Journalistes de l’Information Sociale – AJIS), socialist MEP Pervenche Bérès and a representative from the European Commission’s Directorate General for Social Affairs came to Paris on Friday, September 24th to talk about social Europe with the press.
