On Monday, May 18th, the European Parliament adopted (158 votes for, 137 against and 7 abstentions) the report developed by Austrian MEP Hella Ranner. In this document, the conservative MEP comes back to the European Commission’s 2009 report on the sanctions adopted by the Member States after the amendment of annex III to the 2006 directive on the implementation of European social legislation in terms of road transport. The annex in question was supposed to provide the Member States with guidelines on the sanctions applicable in case of a serious offense to European rules. Yet, the MEPs regretted, on Tuesday, the fact that some countries haven’t yet sent such information to the European Commission which couldn’t do an analysis in its report. Nevertheless, they congratulate the European executive for its work and ask it to go further, via the legislative option or not, to improve the harmonization of sanctions in terms of road transport.
