On November 24, 2008, during their meeting with the vice-president of the European Commission responsible for enterprise and industry, Gunter Verheugen, representatives from the European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF) expressed their expectations concerning the measures Brussels could adopt to secure the future of the auto industry. During this meeting, dedicated to the
future of the car industry and the measures the European Commission could take
to support manufacturers, suppliers and workers in the auto industry, EU Commissioner
Verheugen reasserted the Commission’s “strong commitment” to safeguard employment
in the sector. After an exchange of views with Peter Scherrer, the EMF General
