Euro MP’s blame States for the poor application of the directive on workers’ posting

The initiative report of Elizabeth Schroedter (Greens, Germany) on the application of directive 96/71 on workers' posting was adopted by the Commission of Social affairs of the European Parliament on September 13th, 2006 (see our article n°06451). The amended version urges Member States to transpose the directive and to put the necessary means to look after its application. Debates over the "services directive "have made this issue even more sensitive. (Ref. 06898)

MP’s deposited 143 amendments and the report was adopted with 28 polls for, 13 against and one abstention. This result confirms that Euro MP ’s of the Commission of Social affairs believe the free movement of services, competitiveness and the necessity to ensure the protection of workers are compatible. The adopted report, which must now be presented before the plenary Assembly for final adoption, puts the emphasis on:

  • the responsibility of Member States for difficulties of application of 96/7
