European Metalworkers’ Federation meets with EU Commission to discuss Azambuja closure

European Metalworkers' Federation asks European Commission to intervene in the Azambuja case, reminds that Brussels granted 50 million euros in subsidies to GM. Peter Sherrer, General Secretary of the EMF, tells e-europnews that the fight is not over. (Ref. 06838)

The European Metalworkers’ Federation is continuing its battle against GM’s plan to close the plant located in Azambuja, Portugal, which manufactures the Opel Combo. Earlier this summer, General Motors Europe announced its decision to close the site on 31 December 2006.

Peter Scherrer, General Secretary of the EMF, said GM was violating its promises regarding employment, linked to the subsidies granted by Brussels. The automobile group was previously committed to maintaining employment in Portu
