On September 6th 2006, MEP's passed an own-initiative report which outlines the concept of the European Social Model. Members underline the "urgent need for the concept to be reformed" and make several proposals aimed at reforming the model to preserve it. (Réf. 06866)
First of all, the Parliament underlines “the necessity to preserve and reinforce the values associated to the European Social Model”, namely equality, solidarity, individual rights and responsibilities, access of all citizens to high-quality public services. MEP’s believe it is essential for the EU to renew its commitment to a social Europe, in order to restore the confidence of citizens in the European project, “which provides jobs, growth and prosperity”.
