Finland: government announces controversial changes to fixed term employment and employment termination contracts

Both the opposition and trade unions are mobilizing in opposition to the government’s most recent announcements aimed at boosting youth employment via fixed term employment contracts and employment termination conditions for companies with fewer than 20 staff.

On 11 April, following a two-day government meeting, the government presented its 2019-2022 draft budget figures as well as announcing its intention to alter current legislation on employment contracts by allowing employers to conclude fixed term employment contracts with job seekers under the age of 30 who have been unemployed for at least 3 months.
