Finland: government, challenged because of its recent policies to activate the unemployed, calls for help from companies

Faced with the threat of social movement, Finland’s Prime Minister is calling on employers to help by hiring the unemployed for short periods of time. The trade unions, which also represent the unemployed, are gearing up for a mobilization on 2 February in response to recently adopted measures seeking to tighten controls on the jobless, and especially the one that requires them to find 18 hours of salaried work, or €240 of freelance worker income, or five days of training every three months, without which their unemployment benefits will be lowered.

In fact over recent months in a bit to boost the employment rate (70.4% in November) and lower unemployment (7.8%) the government has undertaken measures to make it easier for companies to hire and to make the jobless more active on the labor market.
