Finland: Volvo to close plant in Tampere and transfer production to Poland

Volvo is going to give notice to 213 workers in Tampere, Finland. The Swedish car manufacturer is shutting its bus construction plant and transferring production to Poland. In addition to this plant which will close at the end of August, 24 employees from another site in Lieto, near Turku, are going to loose their job, because Volvo is also restructuring there, keeping 250 employees only. Negotiations with trade unions closed on April 30 on a failure. Volvo is ready to pay €1 million in full and final payment, but it won’t go beyond its legal duties, notably support the reclassification of the people dismissed, which is not a statutory obligation in Finland. About 20 employees concerned can retire early, but Volvo refuses to pay redundancy compensation for the others, except for a few seniors.
