France: government and social partners ready to act against work-related stress

After receiving the report on psychosocial risks on March 12, Xavier Bertrand, Minister of Labor, announced the beginning of a large national study on work-related stress (WRS) among other initiatives. Social partners will start bargaining for a European framework agreement on stress on April 7. Since the end of 2006, the country has been faced with a wave of suicides at work, which raised awareness among social actors and forced the government to act. (Ref. 080229)

Context raises awareness. Macabre coincidence, the day Mr. Bertrand received the report, an employee from one of Renault’s subcontractors killed himself on the Guyancourt site. Three suicides were already committed on this site between the end of 2006 and the beginning of 2007. On two PSA sites, there were 6 suicides in a year, after which the management ordered a study on stress.
