France: interview of Philippe Martinez, general secretary of the French metalworkers’ union federation, FTM-CGT

Philippe Martinez.  The current economic and social crisis got us thinking about the need to quicken concrete collaboration on a certain number of determined issues, including manufacturing issues in Europe.  During tough times, one may tend to shut themselves off and try to save the day, unfortunately sometimes to the detriment of others.  Cooperation as we envision it should help everyone grow while complying with social regulations.  It’s no secret that there are sympathies within the European trade union world.  Different types of unionism in Europe mean that we are closer to our Mediterranean friends (Spanish and Italian) and to the Walloons.  Within the framework of exchanges with the union organizations of these countries, we thought about organizing a day of reflection during which we would try to tell each other things.  I often say that unionism isn’t about diplomacy; it’s about sincerity and fraternity.  Therefore, the point was to organize a day of reflection telling each other a number of things, presenting unadorned problems and from there try and find reflection tracks and possible alternatives to propose within the framework of the European Metalworkers’ Federation (EMF), whose Congress is coming soon.  It also forces us to ask a certain number of questions since it so happens that our own Congress is in about one month.
