The IG-Metall union and the steel employers' federation (Stahl) signed, in the night between February 19 to February 20, 2008, a substantial wage agreement. The 85.000 employees concerned will get a 5.2% wage increase as well as a €200 bonus. This is steelworkers' higher increase in 15 years. As for the wage conflict in the public service, it has gotten twice as intense. (Ref. 080144)
Ending a conflict punctuated with many warning strikes, the agreement plans:
- A 5.2% wage increase for 85.000 steelworkers in three Lander in western Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia, Bremen and Low Saxony) as of March 1.
- A €200 bonus for February.
- A monthly 70-euro increase for apprentices.
The agreement is valid for 14 months (until March 31, 2009).
The IG-Metall, which originally asked for an 8% wage increase, said the agreement was a “success”, obtained through employees’ “strong resoluteness”
