Germany: a pilot agreement was concluded in the Bade-Wurtemberg in the metallurgy sector

Avoiding the specter of a general strike in the metallurgy and electronics sectors, the union IG-Metall and the managerial organization Südwestmetall reached, on May 4, 2007, a wage agreement for the approximately 800,000 employees concerned in the Bade-Wurtemberg. The agreement, which once again confirms the guiding role the Bade-Wurtemberg has, should be signed by other regions. (Ref. 070398)

The compromise plans a two-step wage increase. After a single 400-euros bonus for the months of April and May will be granted, wages will increase of 4.1% starting in June 2007, and then of 1.7% twelve months later. During this second step, employees will also enjoy a 0.7% economic bonus. In total, the agreement will have a 19 months’ impact.

Warning strikes succeeded. “This is a good compromise, answering to the employees’ interests,” Jürgen Peters, president of IG-Metall congratulated himself;
