After 3 days of strikes (from Monday September 22 to Wednesday September 24) and for the first time hitting 5 separate Amazon facilities, the German services union Verdi sees the action as having provisionally made an impact. According to Verdi, more than 2,000 workers participated in the strike demanding better working conditions and a collective wage agreement. The American Internet giant didn’t bat an eye and still refuses to sign any collective wage agreement in line with regional agreements in the German retail and mail-order sector. Verdi does not exclude hardening its stance with more strike action possible as we go into the end of year holiday period.
A conflict in culture. The conflict between Amazon and Verdi dates back to May 2013 (c.f. article No. 130316) with neither party prepared to give way. These recent strikes started on Sunday night and were due to continue for two days. However they were continued an extra day.
