Germany: BASF to appeal to partial unemployment for the first time since 1993

Currently, only a few of the 95.000 people employed by BASF worldwide will be partially unemployed as of February 1 – around 1.500 for the Munster site and 180 for the Schwarzheide site, which produces paint for the car industry. BASF’s largest production site, in Ludwigshafen, and the Antwerp site aren’t affected by the measure yet. However, the management didn’t rule out the possibility to extend partial unemployment to this site in the near future. “To act quickly in Ludwigshafen if it is necessary, the management took the necessary measures with staff representatives’ consent” BASF pointed out in a communiqué.
