Germany: collective negotiations started in the rail sector and promise to be complicated, and risky for users

The issue of containing “social and wage dumping” caused by the arrival of private rail operators in Germany is going to prevail during the collective negotiations which started on Monday, July 12th in the rail sector. They will go on with the meeting between Transnet, GDBA and the DB’s private rivals (Thursday, July 15th, Fulda) and the first meeting between the GDL and the DB (Friday, July 16th). The second negotiating round with the DB is planned for July 29, 2010. Because of the number of claims and players, these negotiations should be particularly complicated, and could lead to big strike movements as early as August, as in 2007-08.
