Germany: construction union IG-BAU claims for a 5.9% wage increase

Bring eastern and western wages in line. Sign of good will or tactical move, the construction union’s wage claim is slightly below that (6%) it presented for the last collective bargaining round in January 2009 (see our dispatch No.  090089).  According to the Central Union of Construction Firms (ZDB), the IG-BAU may be sending a signal to employers, showing that it was taking their arguments into consideration.  However, nothing is less certain, since the social partners have very different views of the sector’s economic health.  The IG-BAU says the construction industry has followed “stable evolution” over the last couple years thanks to the government’s recovery programs and should keep enjoying the economic recovery this tear.  Dietmar Schäfer, VP of the IG BAU and negotiator in chief, says the evolution of wages in construction needs to follow that of other sectors.  For instance, the chemistry union, IG BCE, is asking for a wage increase between 6 and 7%.
