On Tuesday 22 September both the HR department and the central works council at the German automaker Daimler signed an “Agreement strengthening generation management” at the company. It contains several concrete measures that further initiatives already undertaken by the company’s HR department in 2014 to manage issues including health, ergonomics, ‘intergenerational’ teams, and knowledge transfer. Last year Daimler took the decision to consolidate several of its actions under one strategy called “Generation Management” that focuses on anticipating demographic ageing.
Soon 60-year olds will be on the assembly lines. Demographic ageing is a well-known phenomenon and the German population is ageing fast. So for Daimler the view is “We can see the wave of ageing coming towards. We know that the average age of our workers is rising including in the production department. Five generations currently work side by side in Daimler, and whilst we may not be there yet we will soon have 60-year olds working on our assembly lines. We must adequately plan and prepare for
