Germany: DGB demands a review of the bill on the protection of employees’ private data

The DGB finds this bill excruciating. In November 2009, the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Justice created a stir by announcing that they were working on a bill on the protection of personal data for the labor world only, which Angela Merkel’s Christian-Democratic party used to block (see our dispatch No. 091071). Since then, the Ministry of the Interior has developed a first draft of the law (Gesetz zur Regelung des Beschäftigtendatenschutzes) which will take the form of an amendment to the Federal Data Protection Act (Bundesdatenschutzgesetz - BDGS). Invited by the Ministry of Interior to give its opinion about the text, the verdict the DGB presented on June 17th was damning. This new law “clearly advantages employers and opens wide doors to abusive use of employees’ data” denounced the DGB in a letter sent to the three Ministries concerned (Labor, Interior, Justice).
