For Verdi, the second largest union affiliated with the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) after the IG-Metall, 2014 is starting with good news. For the first time since it was created in 2001, the union – which published on January 9 the 2013 report of membership evolution – managed to stop, last year, the membership hemorrhage and even slightly reversed the trend. Therefore, its numbers increased by 0.16 percent compared with 2012, up to 2,064,541 members. Other good news: the number of young members is on the rise again. For 2014, Verdi’s primary goal is to maintain this positive evolution.
New increase in the number of young members. “We’re really happy with the results. For the first time, we’ve managed to reverse the trend in several sectors and, like last year, get new young members. Not only did we manage to get more members, but we’ve also reduced the number of departures,” a Verdi spokesperson told Planet Labor.
