Germany: for the first time, the IG-Metall plans to put agency workers on strike

“Sectoral bonuses” for agency workers in the metal industry.  “We now represent agency workers on many sites (…).  Thus, in the spring, there will be a few actions involving temporary workers” warned Detlef Wetzel, VP of the IG-Metall.  This perspective, which would be a first, shows the IG-Metall’s newfound power in the temporary sector, usually hardly unionized.  According to the union leader, the IG-Metall has gained 38,000 new members among temporary staff.  On February 22, at the same time as the negotiations in the metal and electrical engineering industries, the IG-Metall will carry out negotiations in the temporary sector.  The union wants to bargain for “sectoral bonuses” in addition to the remuneration received by temporary workers.  These bonuses would be paid when the temporary workers are assigned to a metal company.  They would help agency workers earn the same salary as permanent employees for the same job, which is one of the IG-Metall’s key objectives.
