Germany: GDL to launch strike on freight lines

Important victory for the train drivers' union GDL : on November 2, 2007, the labour court of the Saxony Land allowed drivers to strike on all lines, including freight and national lines. In a new ultimatum, the GDL threatened the Deutsche Bahn (DB) to tackle, as early as Wednesday, the transportation of goods if the management did not make a new offer. Hartmut Medhorn, the DB's CEO, urged the government to step in this conflict which has been lasting for months. (Ref. 070909)

On October 5, 2007, the Chemnitz labour court, which the DB had seized with an summary proceeding appeal, had allowed train drivers to strike at the regional and local level, but not on freight and national lines, because it judged that such a strike would be “disproportionate” and too “costly”. This ruling had sparked off vivid controversy on the role played by justice in social conflicts (see our article No. 070828).
