Germany : government and companies renewed the « Pact for apprenticeship » up to 2010

A positive assessment for the companies.  Making a very positive assessment of the first pact (“a successful instrument”), Dieter Hundt, chairman of the BDA, recalled the objective of the system which is “to propose an apprenticeship to every young person wanting one and capable of accomplishing an apprenticeship course”. The German dual system of apprenticeship combines training in the workplace and theoretical learning in a professional school. Last year, 524 000 apprenticeship contracts were signed, 68 000 of which were “new”, that is, were signed in companies providing training for the first time or having increased their offer of apprenticeship posts. According to the BDA, companies have largely respected their commitment. Alongside the creation of 60 000 new jobs, the companies undertake in the new pact to propose 40 000 “qualification training periods” (compared to 25 000 three years ago). Lasting from six to twelve months, such work experiences, offered by the State, are intended for low qualified young people, who did not succeed in getting an apprenticeship. “This instrument, created with the previous pact, has amply justified its existence. 70% of the participants became apprentices at the end of their training”, declared with satisfaction Dieter Hundt.
