Germany: government wants to improve the professional prospects of disabled workers

“Integration” as a guiding thread.  Adopted in 2006, the UN’s Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and its optional protocol were ratified by Germany in February 2009.  With 200 measures, the German government has now adopted an action plan bringing this convention to life.  Ursula von der Leyen says there is one major idea behind this program: “integration.”  “This key concept means that persons with disabilities shouldn’t be the ones to adjust to society.  We are the ones that have to organize everyday life so as to enable the 9.6 million disabled people living in Germany to take full and natural part in it.”  Since work has, in this respect, a vital role, the action plan contains a series of measures destined to improve the professional prospects of persons with disabilities.  These measures were all gathered within an “initiative on integration” jointly developed with the Länder, the Federal Employment Agency and the Chambers of Commerce and Industry.  It will get a €100M budget.
