Germany: head of Porsche’s works council revives debate on “union bonuses” for IG-Metall members

Can/should collective agreements contain clauses granting advantages to affiliated workers alone?  By calling for an additional bonus for IG-Metall members in the next bargaining round in the metal industry on June 15, Uwe Hück, head of Porsche’s WC, revived an old debate in Germany, behind a major case law.  (Ref.  130412)

Porsche’s WC says the situation is unfair. Uwe Hück, 51, a former boxer and head of Porsche’s words council, told the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” that it was all a matter of fairness. “It’s not fair that IG-Metall members fight for something and in the end everyone gets the same thing, even if they didn’t take part in the agreement.” Thus, Hück wants to negotiate a “union bonus” for IG-Metall members during the next collective bargaining round in the metal industry.
