Germany: interview of Horst Mund, head of the department of “international policy” of the IG-Metall union

Horst Mund.  My “international policy” department runs our activities abroad.  We directly advise Berthold Huber, leader of the IG-Metall and of the IMF (editor’s note: International Metalworkers’ Federation).  Besides, we do monitoring and define the axes of our global strategy.  Finally, part of our work consists in training and warning our colleagues about the European and international dimensions of this or that issue.  In the 1990s, we worked on preparing the EWC directive and, once it passed, we spread its content and concrete consequences within the IG-Metall.  We also do this for international framework agreements.  Our role is also to remind our members of the reality of globalization.  In many countries, Korea for instance, the situation is extremely different: some businesses would never let a union member enter their premises.  This should be remembered.
