While Germany still waits for a government and with the SPD party, in a U-turn, now agreeing to enter into preliminary discussion’ to extend the former ruling conservative-social democrat grand coalition, significant changes decided by the previous grand coalition and for the most part driven by the SPD party will come into force on 01 January 2018. Below is a brief outline of some of the changes.
Minimum Wage. From 01 January all time delays for transposing the ‘Minimum Wage Law’ (Mindestlohngesetz) that had been granted to sectors having already negotiated collective agreements with salary levels below that of the new law prior its coming into force in January 2015 will come to a close. The universal minimum wage, a key SPD project, currently set at €8.84 per hour, will now apply across the board.
