Germany: sectoral minimum wage introduced in industrial laundry and mining

100,000 employees in three sectors. Probably reassured by the declaration made by Angela Merkel who, in spite of the hesitation of her new liberal ally, promised that the system for the negotiation and validation of sectoral minimum wage would remain even though the majority has changed, Mr. Scholz used his last days at the Ministry to implement two new sectoral minimum wages. Thus, on Friday, October 23, he announced that, after negotiations between the social partners, mining and industrial laundry were getting minimum wage. The 40,000 people working in industrial laundry will now receive €7.51 an hour in western Germany and €6.36 in the east. As for the small mining services sector (1,400 employees), hourly minimum wage will amount to €11.17. Finally, industrial and house painting renewed a collective agreement on minimum wage dating back to 2003. However, using the new legislation, the agreement was extended to all the businesses in the sector. With these decisions, the number of German employees working in a sector covered by minimum wage reaches almost 2 million.
