Germany: sharp decline in the number of industrial conflicts in 2010

Quick agreement with the crisis in the background.  In April 2008, the WSI institute presented a very different report, pointing to a substantial increase in the number of strikes in Germany (see our dispatch No.  080384).  However, it seems that it didn’t last.  Thus, according to the researchers, the number of strikers went from approximately 400,000 in 2009 down to 120,000 last year.  The number of workdays lost amounted to nearly 173,000 in 2010, as opposed to 398,000 in 2009.  According to Heiner Dribbusch, WSI labor dispute specialist, this development is mainly the result of the agreement negotiated – in record time and with no dispute – by the social partners in the metal industry and electrical engineering.  Because of the seriousness of the crisis, they managed to reach an agreement two months before the collective agreement in force expired (see our dispatch No.  100156).  “There was also a substantial decrease in the number of conflicts at company level in services compared with previous years” the researcher explained.
