Germany: social partners agree on a 22-month wage freeze for 50,000 Lufthansa employees

In March, Lufthansa’s key objective was to cut by 10% the unitary costs of wages paid to ground personnel, while Ver.di was mostly banking on guarantees for job security. In the end, on Tuesday, July 6, the compromise reached doesn’t seem to secure either of this claims and is characterized by mistrust. Thus, a suspensive reflection clause was requested by both parties. This “Erklärungsfrist” still allows either one of the parties to refuse the agreement until July 28th. The agreement affects Lufthansa’s ground and cabin crew as well as employees working for the Lufthansa Systems, Lufthansa Service Gesellschaft (LGS), Lufthansa Technik and Lufthansa Cargo subsidiaries. During the negotiations for the people working for LGS, in charge of catering for many airlines, Lufthansa threatened Ver.di with placing the subsidiary under the collective agreements of the food sector, managed by the NGG union, where wages are much lower. In the end, it wasn’t carried out.
