Germany: statutory minimum wage for six new sectors

Outside talks at the summit between Angela Merkel and her democrat social partners, bargaining for the details of a historical revival program (see our dispatch No. 090037), the parties of the coalition in power in Berlin also agreed on the introduction of minimum wage in six additional sectors. On January 22, the government will ask the Bundestag to vote to include these sectors into the “Law on posted workers.” The latter enables, in sectors where excessively use of social and wage dumping has been observed, to enforce statutory minimum wage for all the businesses of the sector. However, it must first be negotiated by social partners representing more than 50% of the sector’s employees. The sectors concerned and the minimum wage levels negotiated are the following: assistance and care services (ongoing negotiations), surveillance and safety services (€6-8.32 per hour), the recycling and waste management industry (€8.02/hour), special mining services (€10.29) and industrial laundry services (€1.480,74/month).
