The Verdi services union called on the employees of the American internet giant, Amazon, to take part in a one-day strike today, May 14, in two logistics centers: Leipzig (Saxony) and Bad Hersfeld (Hessen). This is the first strike in Germany for the e-trade giant. Verdi wants Amazon to sign a collective agreement in line with the provisions of the regional collective agreements in force in retail trade. The management replied that its employees work in logistics, not trade, and refuses to negotiate. (Ref. 130316)
No collective agreement at Amazon. After repeatedly threatening to strike and consulting its members, Verdi is now taking action. This Tuesday morning, the services union called on employees at Amazon’s logistics centers in Leipzig (about 2,000 employees) and Bad Hersfeld (3,300) to stop working. The strike started at 6 this morning and will end tonight before the end of the night shift. In early April, 97% of Verdi members in these centers voted to strike (see article No. 130235). ...
