Germany : the Deutsche Bahn fired two strikers with no prior notice

For the first time since the beginning of the conflict which opposes the train drivers' union (GDL) and the Deutsche Bahn, the German railroad company confirmed, on October 22, 2007, that it fired, with no advanced warning, two drivers on strike and sent dozens of warnings to other strikers. That same day, the GDL announced a new 30-hour strike which will start on October 25 at 2 am and end the Friday after at 8 am. (Ref. 070874)

For weeks, the union of train drivers and the driving staff, which is asking for a 31% wage increase and a specific collective agreement for its members, has been accusing the DB of trying to “torpedo” its movement by intimidating strikers or by requisitioning drivers for “emergency services” (Notdienste).
