Germany: the extreme-right makes advances during Daimler’s WC elections

Eagerly awaited, the results from WC membership elections in Daimler’s facilities are now available and unambiguous with an overwhelming win for the IG Metall union. At Daimler’s Untertükheum facility, the union won 75.7% of the employees’ vote and bagged 37 out of the 47 seats available, three more than compared with the previous 2014 elections. However in this facility the extreme-right union, ‘Zentrum Automobil’ (c.f. article No.10584) also has cause for congratulations for it secured 13.2% of the vote and six seats, two more than in 2014. This union also secured 3.4% of the votes in the Sindelfingen facility and for the first time won a presence on the WC with two seats. This union also has two WC seats in the Rastatt facility.

Fears stemming from globalization. In an interview on the day after the vote, Wolfgang Niecke, President of the Daimler Untertükheum facility said he was relieved by the outcome. “We really did secure a great result,” the employee representative welcomed. IG Metall secured 75.7% of the votes cast in the Untertükheum election and 74.9% in the Sindelfingen election.
