Germany: the grand coalition government has started setting out a ‘national life-long training strategy’ in concert with the social partners

On 03 September, at the Meseberg Chateau, Germany’s Chancellor gathered together government Ministers and social partners that are impacted by digitalization for the ninth ‘Dialogue on the Future’ event. CDU Chancellor Angela Merkel delivered a positive report on the meeting saying that “substantial progress” had been made in terms of life-long learning and training since the previous meeting. “We have formulated a national life-long training strategy,” the Chancellor indicated and added that the first piece of draft legislation for this would be on the government’s September agenda. Indeed, some days previously, Employment and Social Affairs Minister Hubertus Heil (SPD) finalized a draft law bolstering life-long training, which aims to enable companies impacted by digitalization to provide staff with the relevant life-long training together with financial support from the Federal Employment Agency.
