Three months to the opening of the wage negotiations for the 3.6 million employees in the metallurgy and electronics sector, the conflict around part-time work at the end of the career (Altersteilzeit) has once again escalated (see our dispatch No. 080212). On June 9, 2008, the 4th negotiation round in the pilot Bade-Wurtemberg region ended, with no outcome, and the negotiation were postponed until June 18. The IG-Metall union called upon metalworkers to take part, from June 16 on, to warning strikes throughout the country. (Ref. 080481)
From on June 4-6, over 90.000 employees in the sector had been involved in strikes in the Bade-Wurtemberg region, where most negotiation between the Land’s IG-Metall and its employers’ counterpart, Südwestmetall. The outcome of their negotiation will be extended at the national level. Already hurt by its defeat on retirement at 67, the IG-Metall intends to fight at all costs to maintain the possibility for metalworkers to retire early with advantageous conditions.
