Each year the Confederation of German Trade Unions (DGB) presents an annual report on the state of apprenticeships in the country. Whilst 71.4% of those questioned are satisfied with their positions, the slow inexorable erosion of the position of apprenticeships continues with, again this year, record lows being reached. Only 531,000 apprenticeship contracts were concluded in 2013/2014, (570,000 in 2011/2012). The report also highlights the correlation between poor training conditions on offer and the shortage of workers in the sectors concerned.
At the beginning of September 2014, the DGB presented its 2014 annual report on apprenticeships. The report bases its content on interviews with 18,000 apprentices. Overall, the German system of work- linked training works. However it is witnessing a continual decline.
