The German metalworkers' trade union IG Metall began, on January 16th 2007, in the Saar, its campaign to protest against the bill raising the legal retirement age from 65 to 67 (see story nº 61209). More than 7000 employees of 17 companies (including those of Ford at Saarlouis) stopped work during three hours and took to the streets against the reform. In the days to come, the trade union will extend the movement in the remainder of the country. (Ref. 070040)
On its Internet site, Jürgen Peters, president of IG-Metall, justifies these strikes by reminding that, as of today, only one employee in five share indeed retires at 65. “The others already left active life for a long time, because the high workloads oblige them to stop earlier”, says the trade-union leader, who concludes : “This is why the retirement age at 67 is nothing but a governmental program to reduce retirement pensions “. He warns : “anger is high in the companies”.
