Compromise. Pointing to the German carmaker’s good results in 2010, the IG-Metall’s collective bargaining committee announced, on December 6th, that it intended to claim for a 6% wage increase over 12 months for VW’s 100,000 German employees on the occasion of the renegotiation of the company collective agreement (see our dispatch No. 100863). VW’s management had announced that it wanted to stick to the collective agreement signed in February 2010 in the metal industry, providing for a 2.7% wage increase in 2011 (see our dispatch No. 100156). Thus, it offered a 2.9% increase over 23 months. The agreement signed in Hanover on Monday night (Feb. 7) after 13 hours of negotiations can therefore be seen as a compromise between the two.
