Germany:Verdi union claims for a 6% wage increase in insurance

Protect employees’ health better.  Gathered on November 10th in cologne, Verdi’s collective contract commission (Tarifkommission) laid down its requirements for the coming negotiations in insurance.  Thus, Verdi claims for a 6% wage increase, or at least €150 a month, over 12 months, for the approximately 175,000 people working in the sector.  Apprentices should also be covered by this increase.  In addition to this wage chapter, the union requests employment guarantees and other measures on the protection of health.  Thus, the union wants businesses to commit to take measures to reduce the heavy workload weighing on employees and the amount of overtime, which leads to many sick leaves.  “With regard to the radical structural evolution in insurance, measures for job security, the protection of health and a strong wage increase are more necessary than ever” warned Uwe Foullong, member of Verdi’s steering committee.  Besides, the union also wants another extension of gradual early retirement measures (Altersteilzeit), the recruitment of all apprentices after their training, and an increase in the number of apprentices.
