The British Parliament is currently examining a draft law introduced by the Minister of Trade and Industry that extends parents’ time off.
The text, named Work and Family Bill, plans to extend the paid maternity
leave to 9 months. It is currently 6 months, which is the most generous in Europe. And the
government even hopes to reach 12 months before the end of the legislature. But
the mother’s allowance only amounts to 102,80 Pounds per week (149,80 Euros)
whatever the previous salary was. This allowance is due to increase to 106
Pounds next April (154,40 Euros). In 1997, when Labor came to power, the
allowance was 55 Pounds...
