Great Britain: age discrimination can be justified on cost grounds

Discrimination on the grounds of age can be justified on economic considerations.  Nigel Woodcock, formerly chief executive at Cumbria Primary Care Trust, was made redundant in 2007 following an NHS restructure.  His employer gave him the required 12 months’ redundancy notice 13 months before his 50th birthday.  If the redundancy came after this birthday, the company would have had to pay a windfall pension to Woodcock.  In doing this, Cumbria Primary Care Trust saved over £500,000 (about €600,000).
