Introduced by labor MP Keith Hill, the bill on the toughening of sanctions in terms of offenses to the law on occupational health and safety of 1974 is going on a third reading at the House of Commons in a month. (Ref. 080410)
Bigger fines. Entitled ‘Health and Safety (Offences) Bill 2007-2008’, this bill proposes to quadruple the amount of fines against breaches, to facilitate trials in the Crown Court, and to trivialize jail sentences for the most serious offenses. “We want to repress those who do not respect health and safety at work with a more discouraging law” the MP explained. Indeed, maximum fines would go from £5.000 to £20.000 for ‘regulatory’ offenses.
